Nineteenth Century Restorations LLC has been chosen to be the General Contractor for the Woody Guthrie Birth-home Reconstruction Project in Okemah Oklahoma. The home will be re-constructed on the very site where it stood until 1979, when the City of Okemah had it torn down. Fortunately, due to the incredible foresight of the owner of the property at that time, Earl Walker, the disassembled home was stored in a building in Okemah for all these years, waiting for a reconstruction.
Walker bought the property in 1962, and even managed to get to New York to visit Woody Guthrie in the hospital before he died to get his blessing to raise money to restore the home and turn it into a museum honoring the singer and his music. Any additional funds will go to Huntington’s Disease (HD) research. Woody blessed his endeavor, however Walker faced setback after setback for decades as many of the townspeople would hear nothing of honoring someone with alleged ties to the communist party. Sadly, Walker passed away in the early ‘90’s, having never seen his dream fulfilled.
This summer, Dan Riedemann, owner of Nineteenth Century Restorations LLC is deeply honored to be the General Contractor chosen to re-construct the home on its original foundation stones at the exact site where it stood on July 14th, 1912 when Woody Guthrie was born in the bedroom of the modest wood frame home. As we celebrate Woody Guthrie’s 100th Birthday all year with scheduled celebrations around the world, Nineteenth Century Restorations will be painstakingly re-constructing the home to be unveiled on Woody’s Birthday by his 94 year old Sister, Mary Jo, who attends the annual Woody Guthrie Folk Festival every year.
